- Word-Processing Files
Try opening each of the following files compjobs.htm
compjobs.lwp compjobs.doc
compjobs.pdf
compjobs.rtf
compjobs.wps
For
each, answer the following questions: (a) What file-type
is it (according to the extension)? (b) Can the computer
open it - e.g. can you read it? (c) If it opens,
can you edit (change) it? (d) Is it possible to save it back on the web-site? (e)
Open the file compjobs.doc. Save
it on drive D: as a Microsoft Word .DOC file. Start WordPad
(in[Start/Programs/Accessories]). Now try to open
the document you saved. What happens? What "went
wrong" when you opened the document in WordPad?
- Moving Files
Open the web-site http://www.sova.org/
and save the web-page. (a) According to
the good advice in the notes, what should do before
saving the file? (b) According to the good advice, where
should you save the file? (c) According to the good advice,
what would be a good file-name? (d) Get a diskette
from the teacher (free!) and copy this web-page onto the diskette.
Then move to a different computer (swap with a
neighbor) and open the file. Did it work? If
not, what's wrong? (e) Describe a better way to "take
a web-site home" with you.

- Find a copy of the colored schedule you
made back in August.
(a) Was it easy to find?
What made it easy or what made it hard? (b) Log-in
to your HotMail or Yahoo account, and email a copy of your colored
schedule to yourself. (If you don't have one, send some
other file as an attachment).
- Log-off and log-in again as a different
user - if you were logged in as Lab329, then use your own
account, or Lab325.
(a) Do you still have access to the same
D: drive? (b) Do you still have access to the same Z: drive? (c)
Does the floppy-diskette drive still work? (d) Do you still
have access to the Internet? (e) Can you still log-in to
your Yahoo or HotMail account? (f) Can you retrieve
the colored schedule you sent (above)?
- Open the file compjobs.doc .
Add your name at the top of the page.
Without saving,
press the small reset button on the computer. Reboot
(restart) and log-in again as the same user. Start
MS-Word. (a) Can you recover the document you were working
on when the reset-button was pressed? (b) Do
you think it is possible that you are someone else might accidentally
press the reset button when you are working? (c) Describe
some other "accident" that might cause your computer
to stop working suddenly, without warning.
